Importance of Smoke Alarms

Smoke alarms can only save lives if they are properly maintained and in good working condition. They are an important part of safety in a home because a smoke detector will automatically identify and warn you of the presence of smoke.

How do smoke detectors work?
There are two common types of smoke detectors: photoelectric and ionization. The photoelectric sensors use a beam of light to recognize smoke. The beam will be shot in a straight line when there is no smoke and will scatter when smoke hits, signaling the alarm. The second type of smoke detector uses ions; when smoke enters the chamber the electric currents drop and the alarm will sound.
Maintenance Tips
Test your smoke alarm. You should check your detectors once every month to verify if the battery is still working or not.
Vacuum your smoke alarm. Use a soft brush attachment around the vents of your smoke alarm once every 6 months to rid dust buildup and cobwebs.
Replace the battery. If you notice that your smoke detector is making a beeping noise, it may be time to switch the battery. However, not all smoke detectors have a battery so be sure to check the manufacturer's instructions before replacing the batteries.
Smoke detectors not only save lives, but could save you lots of money. If a fire occurs in your home, a properly working smoke detector will alert you of a potential emergency. The sooner you're able to respond to a disaster, the better.
